Dos and Donts

Just a quick overview.  You need to remember:
  1. You are responsible for policing your own IP
  2. BI has ZERO responsibility for any content you create.
  3. You are legally responsible for EVERYTHING you upload to ANY server, host or service provider. If you publish any stolen content to the internet and regardless of who did it first YOU are still legally liable.
  4. There is a Crawler Tool that means authors can search for reuploads and parts of their work - meaning they can find any addon or part of addon, texture, model or script you upload that matches their content. Dont be a dick and steal content. You will get found out.
  5. No Licence does NOT equal Open Source - No licence means that the strictest Copyright and IP rules apply.
  6. Steam Workshop is controlled by US Law (unless you are in the EU and even then 90% of the conditions set out in the Agreement still apply) so claiming the law in your country allows you to take content doesn't fly.
Do
  • Include a license - Being clear about your intentions helps everyone. - Read more here
  • Do get permissions to use/edit everything you publish - Read more here
  • Make sure you credit everyone that you get content from - Fair is fair. Credit where its due etc. But Credit/Attribution alone is not enough., YOU NEED PERMISSION!
  • Read and understand the Steam Subscriber Agreement
Don't
  • Take any content without permission - Fair Use doesn't cover ripping content even for "private" use. It really is regarded as theft. Infringement or at the best Plagerism.
  • Use Trademarks and Logos.  Some companies may turn a blind eye to non-commercial hobbyists using their Logos but why risk it.  Trademarks have to be protected to remain enforceable this means non-commercial use may not stop action from IP owners. You may find yourself DMCA'd or worse issued with a bill for using thier trademarks without permission.
  • Do not upload unless you have explicit (and verifiable by a 3rd party) written permission to do so. It is prohibited by Section 6D of the Steam agreement and breaking this contract potentially risks your Steam account and all your games.
